A big band gathering is taking place again this year in the rustic setting of the former factory hall at the Dynamitfabrik on the Campus Nobel. The lakeside beer garden offers fine wines from Pinard de Picard, fresh beer, and delicious food. Admission to the open-air campus grounds begins at 6:00 p.m., allowing you time to enjoy a bite to eat and a drink beforehand. The event kicks off in the hall at 7:00 p.m. with the swinging sounds of the "Jailhouse Bigband."
Jailhouse Bigband 2022
The Jailhouse Bigband was originally founded in 1991 by members of the Saarwellingen Music Association. Over the years, the band's lineup has changed significantly; it now comprises around 20 renowned musicians from across the Saarland region. The big band's repertoire includes standards from the genres of jazz, Latin, musical theater, and funk, as well as contemporary big band music. The band is supported by vocalist Christina Meißner, a well-known figure in the Saarland and surrounding areas. Since the autumn of 2025, musical direction has been led by Matthias Ernst, who previously conducted the Saarland State Student Big Band.
Afterwards, the Silent Explosion Orchestra presents a special highlight:
100 years of John Coltrane. Silent Explosion Orchestra feat. The 3 Tenors
To mark the centenary of John Coltrane (1926–1967), the Silent Explosion Orchestra, under the direction of Kevin Naßhan,
is dedicating an extraordinary concert project to the legendary saxophonist and composer. Together with three
outstanding tenor saxophonists—Tony Lakatos, Johannes Müller, and Gilad Atzmon—the band presents an energetic,
deeply felt tribute to one of the most influential musicians in the history of jazz.
Silent Explosion Orchestra
Few artists embody the spiritual dimension of jazz—that tireless quest for expression, freedom, and depth—quite like Coltrane. The *100 Years of John Coltrane* program brings together newly arranged classics such as "Equinox" and "A Love Supreme" alongside lesser-known yet equally outstanding works like "Lonnie’s Lament" and "Grand Central," creating a cohesive portrait of Coltrane’s body of work. Created specifically for this project by renowned arranger Frank Reinshagen, the program is tailor-made for a "small big band" ensemble (ten musicians) and three soloists. The arrangements create a canvas for rich tonal colors, powerful horn sections, and expressive solos from the three tenor saxophonists, whose individual voices engage in an intense dialogue. The result is a sonic tour de force bridging tradition and modernity—a tribute to Coltrane’s legacy.
